Learn how to make simple hemp jewelry knots to create your own jewelry designs with a few basic steps.
Macramé jewelry making was very popular in the 1960’s and 1970’s and in recent years has seen a comeback in popularity. Since macramé involves the basic formation of different knots with some type of cord, hemp is a popular choice. Hemp has become more versatile today since there are now a variety of colors to choose from, and it is not restricted to the traditional beige or tan colors of the past.
Let’s get started in learning a few basic instructions. If you can learn some simple jewelry knot designs, then you can begin making your own hemp jewelry.
Here are a couple simple hemp jewelry knots to start with, such as the half knot and the square knot.
Before you start your jewelry making with hemp, cut the desired length of hemp cord needed, depending on what piece of jewelry you are making.
For example, a bracelet, necklace, or even a ring would require different amounts of hemp cord to cut.
Half Knot
Start with four hemp cords. Line them side by side.
Use the two cords in the middle as your center cords.
Take the outer cord on the right side, and bring it over the two cords in the center, then place it under the cord on the left.
Next, take the left cord under the two cords in the center and bring it over the right cord and through the loop that is formed there.
Finally, grip the two outside cords and pull them gently to tighten them and you will have a half knot.
A useful tip: Be sure to use the same amount of tension when tightening any of your hemp jewelry knots, this will keep your knots uniform and avoid any uneven bumps in your jewelry piece.
Square Knot
Start with four hemp cords. Line them side by side.
Use the two cords in the middle as your center cords.
Take the outer cord that is on the right side and move it under the two center cords and over the left cord.
Next, take the left cord over the two cords in the center and bring it under the right cord into the loop that is formed there.
Finally, grip the two outside cords and pull gently to tighten them and you will have a square knot.
You’ll notice when making the square knot that some of the directions are basically reversed from the directions for the half knot.
By repeating the half knots and square knots you can create variations of these two simple knots. Use your imagination and be creative in designing your own unique jewelry!
An added variation to hemp jewelry would be to add your favorite beads to the twine or cords while you are making your basic hemp design knots, creating a more colorful and intricate design.
When using hemp for jewelry, making simple hemp jewelry knots can lead to hours of fun and rewarding jewelry making for you.
