Step 1 - Decide on a knot type. Most hemp jewelry starts with either a simple square knot or a spiral knot, which is simply the first half of a square knot repeated throughout the piece.
Step 2 - Draw out your design before you start. This works especially well if you are using beads in your necklace. This gives you a template to work from so that you don't forget what beads go where or at what point the knot type will alternate.
Step 3 - Measure your hemp. The best way to do this is to measure the length you need your finished piece to be. For your inner (carrier) cords, you want each cord to be roughly one and a half times the length of the finished product. Pull out this much string, then fold it to create a loop, pulling out the second length of carrier cord. For the outer cords, simply repeat this process, making each side twice the length of the carrier cord.
Step 4 - Choose a finishing bead with a hole large enough for all strands of hemp to fit through.
Step 5 - Take the looped strands, making sure each one is folded in half, and tie a simple knot about half an inch from the top of the loops tying both cords together, leaving a small loop at the top with enough room for a finishing bead to fit through.
Step 6 - Secure your hemp so that you can work without having it wiggle around or twist. This can easily be done with a heavy piece of wood and a nail or screw to loop the top knot around. This keeps it taut and makes completing the knots much easier.
