Making Jewelry with Gimp

At the end of this article there is a two strand basic pattern that can be used to fashion a ring, bracelet, anklet and/or necklace. After you try the basic pattern, look around!

For this project you need:
1 - two strands of gimp in complementing colors
2 - hooks and closings (optional)
3 - beads or charms (optional)
4 - button for ring (optional)
5 - sturdy card board or preferred work surface
6 - safety pin

How to:
Cut the first strand about 2 times the length of your finished project. The second strand, which you will be using to tie all your knots, should be 4 times the length of your finished item. For example; if you want an ankle bracelet that is 9 inches long, you need one strand 18 inches long. The second strand should be 36 inches long.

Holding one end of each color together and even with each other, tie one overhand knot several inches away from the gimp ends. This is your starting knot. Pull this knot tight. Stick a safety pin through the knot and attach the pin to a piece of sturdy card board or other work surface. Tip: Old pillows and 3-ring binders make great work surfaces!

You will want to start very close to the starting knot. Take the longer of the two strands and loop it around the shorter strand. Move down, over and to the right. Bring the longer strand back up, to the left and under the shorter strand. Most importantly, you will finish with the longer strand end ABOVE where you started. Keeping that in mind, you are basically just wrapping one strand around the other. In macram, this is called the half-hitch knot. There are plenty of books and websites that have diagrams and/or illustrations of the "half-hitch."

Once you understand how to do the half-hitch knot, just keep repeating that same knot over and over until your piece is the desired length. Rings can be made rather quickly! As you continue with the half-hitch, the work will begin to turn or spiral. Just keep working the half-hitch and let it do its spiral thing!

Finishing:
Tie another overhand knot (with both strands!) very close to the last half-hitch knot completed. Thread a loose gimp end in an upholstery needle. Insert needle into closest knot; thread gimp strand through and under a few knots. Remove needle and trim end close to work. Repeat for each loose strand.

If you want to attach a hook, toggle and/or clasp, simply wrap loose ends tightly around your finding before threading them through knots.

Note: Many patterns instruct to use glue for securing your loose gimp ends. Keep in mind, if you will be wearing a piece, the more movement or elements to which the piece is exposed will cause the glue bond to break. This is why that method is not recommended here.

Variations:
1) To add a little more pizzazz to your gorgeous creation(s), string any desired beads and/or charms at desired intervals on the shorter piece of gimp. Continue working the half-hitch with the longer strand right beside the
bead/charm.

2) An easy way to complete a necklace quickly is to have more space between your half-hitch knots. This also gives more of a chain appearance to the completed piece.

3) A fun way to make a ring is to finish your little piece by tying all the gimp ends to an old funky button very unique!

4) You can leave loose ends as ties. Keep them long enough and you can tie bows to close your bracelets and necklaces. Just don't forget to make the final overhand knot to secure all those half hitches!

Another Hemp Bracelet Tutorial

How often have you wanted to make that special gift for your friend instead of buying from the market? A handmade gift always becomes all the more special when given to a friend as a token of friendship and love. Bracelets are the most common handmade jewelry given to friends and loved ones. So if you have always wanted to know how to make a hemp bracelet, here are instructions that will help you along the way. Just read them and try your hand at making that perfect hemp bracelet for your bestest friend!

Things Required
Hemp twine
Scissors
Safety pin
Beads

Instructions

1. You need to buy hemp twine from a store. The most popular option for bracelet is the 1mm thick natural colored hemp that is also known as 20 lb twine. Of course, you are free to choose any color you want!

2. Measure the strand of the hemp around six times the length of the bracelet you want to make; then cut it. Also, cut another strand of the hemp that measures almost twelve times the length of the bracelet you want to make.

3. Taking one strand at a time, fold both of them in the middle and make a crease at the mid-point of each strand. Tie a knot at the creased midpoints together and leave a loop at the end, which is around 1/2- to 3/4-inch long.

4. Pin the loop to a piece of fabric furniture in order to secure the knotted end. Place something heavy on top of the loop for weighing it down. Now, place the four strands in a way that the short ones are in the middle together and the one long strand on each side.

5. Begin knotting by pulling the right outer strand over the middle strands to a 45 degree angle away from them. Take it below the left outer strand creating a figure ‘4’. Now take the left outer strand below the middle strands and pull through the middle of the figure ‘4’. Pull both the outer strands to tighten them.

6. Do the same thing again, this time on the opposite side, starting with the left outer strand. This kind of alternate knotting will give you a flat pattern. You may create a spiral patter by knotting on the same side.

7. Now, add a bead by threading it on the two short middle strands. The bead should be kept in place by knotting around in the figure 4 pattern. One or two knots must be left between each bead.

8. Continue in this pattern till the bracelet is long enough for you to tie around your wrist. When you are on the verge of finishing the bracelet, tie all the four strands together in one strong knot. The four loose strands beyond this knot should be tied through the loop on the other end of the bracelet.

How To Make Hemp Necklaces (Hemp Bracelets)

Below we have in full detail a tutorial on how to make your hemp necklaces or bracelets in a matter of minutes. The make for a great gift for a friend or for yourself. You can even easily make a profit selling them at local events!

Step 1

The first thing you need to do when starting off your hemp necklace is to cut strings of hemp to the lengths you need. Cut the first string to a length of twice the size you want your necklace to be plus a few extra inches. Cut the second string to around 10 times the length you want your necklace to be. Fold each of these strings in half. Put the two strings together at the spot where the fold meets and tie a knot similar to the one in the picture to the left. Now tape down the end like in the picture.

Step 2

This next step is very simple but I included it just to make sure everyone has it right so far. You simply take the two longer strings and pull them to the outside, one on each side. While keeping the two shorter ones in the center and together.

Step 3

This is the step where you start to make the first knot. I skipped ahead a few knots just so the camera could get a better picture of what to do. This doesn't effect yours at all though. The first knot may look a little strange so don't worry about that. In this step you take the string on the left and make a loop over the to middle strings as shown in the picture.

Step 4

For this step you take the string on the right, feed it over the first string, under the middle two and through the loop you created in the previous step. A trick to speed up the process of going through the loop is to bunch up the end of each string so you can feed it through at a quicker rate.

Step 5

The last step is to pull the ends of the two strings together so that you form the first knot. Be sure to make this a tight fit. To continue finishing the necklace simply repeat the process over and over until you have gone down the length of the middle strings. To create the twirl you do the exact same process over and over. To create a flat necklace do the same process but in reverse each time. Meaning make the loop on the right side this time instead of the left. To end your necklace just throw a bead on and tie it off.

How to Start a Hemp Jewelry Project (Hemp Jewelry)

Step 1 - Decide on a knot type. Most hemp jewelry starts with either a simple square knot or a spiral knot, which is simply the first half of a square knot repeated throughout the piece.

Step 2 - Draw out your design before you start. This works especially well if you are using beads in your necklace. This gives you a template to work from so that you don't forget what beads go where or at what point the knot type will alternate.

Step 3 - Measure your hemp. The best way to do this is to measure the length you need your finished piece to be. For your inner (carrier) cords, you want each cord to be roughly one and a half times the length of the finished product. Pull out this much string, then fold it to create a loop, pulling out the second length of carrier cord. For the outer cords, simply repeat this process, making each side twice the length of the carrier cord.

Step 4 - Choose a finishing bead with a hole large enough for all strands of hemp to fit through.

Step 5 - Take the looped strands, making sure each one is folded in half, and tie a simple knot about half an inch from the top of the loops tying both cords together, leaving a small loop at the top with enough room for a finishing bead to fit through.

Step 6 - Secure your hemp so that you can work without having it wiggle around or twist. This can easily be done with a heavy piece of wood and a nail or screw to loop the top knot around. This keeps it taut and makes completing the knots much easier.
